Another notable lunch stop racked up, and we’re heading back for weekend breakfast soon – although I’ll bet they’re busy then. F&B’s Eatery on Hampton is advertising how good their hamburger is, and if that’s not a challenge, I’ve never seen one.
There’s a black bean burger and a turkey burger, plus a patty melt and grilled turkey, but we were after the headliner at this little order-at-the-counter spot. The photo is my double burger – in the background is my pal’s double cheese. Standard toppings are lettuce, tomato, pickle and onion. There’s a chipotle mayo available, which has a generous kick to it; ketchup and mustard are on the tables.
This is one excellent flat-grilled hamburger, I’m here to tell you, especially because it arrived hot and with the crispy edges that can make a good burger an excellent one. Each patty is thicker than the pressed-down style seen, for instance at Steak ‘n Shake, which makes things juicer than those patties. The lettuce is chopped iceberg, equaling a little crunch and no wilted single leaf or wonky inner piece. Large, tender buns hold almost all the moisture.
F&B gets extra points for using Excel for their fountain sodas, including their remarkably good diet cola. But the next time, I’ll pay attention to what’s in the refrigerator case by the cash register, like a rose cider.
The breakfast menu is online, but the specials chalked around the cash register look particularly interesting, like a slider made with tamales and a Benedict with fried eggs. And, yes, Mr. T., there’s biscuits and gravy.
I know I can deputize someone to try the black bean burger, but you’ll have a hard time getting me away from the hamburgers.
